In the 2017 Massage Profession Research Report consumers talk about the connection they see between health care and the massage profession.

71% of Americans believe that massage should be considered a form of health care.

The conditions most likely to lead consumers to talk with their doctors about massage:

37% pain relief or pain management
26% injury recovery or rehabilitation
16% soreness stiffness or spasm

Most female consumers received massage for medical health reasons in 2016, overtaking male consumers, 46% of whom received their last massage for medical or health reasons.

Women increased their use of massage for medical and health reasons in 2016, with 53% getting their last massage for medical or health reasons compared to 39% in 2015.

56% of physicians were the most likely health care professionals to recommend massage to their patients.
